  • Speaker: Dawn Ruddick, Lost and Found: 730 Days in the African Desert
  • Dawn Ruddick is a thirty-something teacher, with two children, a husband and a mortgage. Six years ago she traded in her car and career for two years of volunteer work in the desert of Namibia. Leaving Canada with little more than a backpack and her Birkenstocks, she attempted to navigate working, socializing, and surviving in post-apartheid Africa. Through five vignettes from her 'tales of the south side', she will share her experiences in a colourful and volatile land: exploring politics, education, poverty, the Aids pandemic, and the spirit of a resilient and hopeful people. For anyone who has found themselves in a rut, longing for a life beyond the routine, these tales show how one person got hopelessly lost and permanently found in a remote and isolated village in Africa. (and she'll show you how her Birkenstocks weathered the journey as well..)
